Margarete and Ellie

Margarete und Ellie are inspired by an amazing strong willed woman who changed the way the world played. Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen an der Brenz in Germany and despite her illness and being confined to a wheelchair she founded Steiff Manufacturing in 1880. Her first big seller was a small toy elephant. Within 6 years, with the help of family, Margarete had sold 5,000 toy elephants. She went on to create other animals as toys for children and her nephew Richard Steiff designed the worlds first toy bear with moveable joints. The company continues today and I have been fortunate to visit the Steiff Museum in Germany on more than one occasion.
Margarete is hand sewn in a dusky green short pile Steiff Schulte mohair. She has ultra suede paws, black German glass eyes and is fully jointed. She is filled with cotton fill and mineral granulate, is slightly aged with copic markers and has a hand embroidered nose. She is detailed with pale green pearls and a dusky green ribbon. Ellie is hand sewn from mini bear fabric and is filled with cotton fill. She has hand sewn eyes and a tail from hemp string. Ellie is also detailed with a dusky green bow. Margarete sits at 9 1/2 cm and Ellie stands at 5 cm. Both creations are my own pattern and whilst Margarete and Ellie are not meant for small hands, they can be gently handled.
